Thangaserry place was ruled by the Portuguese, after them the Dutch and then at last by the British. The beach is at a distance of 5 KM from the main city and stretches over 3 KM. Portuguese first established Thangaserry as their first trading centre, and Afonso de Albuquerque established St. Thomas Fort in 1519. The Dutch rulers took over control of the piece of land in 1661 when they made it their capital land, and it was called Dutch Malabar. The fort was about 20 feet tall. One can also see the remains of the Fort at the beach, where the Archaeological Survey of India is undergoing restoration work. There are also Chinese coins and artefacts on the spot.

The Lighthouse was named after the anime of the place. The British first built the lighthouse in 1902 and it is about 144 feet tall. From here, the navigators and fishermen are guided to navigate their ways. It is the second tallest lighthouse in Kerala, and one can get to the top of the lighthouse by climbing up to 200 steps. At the top of the lighthouse, one also gets to see unobstructed views of the area up to 13 miles.&nbsp;

Thangassery fort is the ruins of the ancient fort built by the Portuguese under the supervision of Afonso De Albuquerque, to protect their trade. It was established in 1518 as Fort St. Thomas. Later in 1661, Dutch conquered the fort and transformed it into a Capital of Dutch Malabar. After several years, in 1795 British East India Company took over the fort and was leased to Travancore in 1823 for 20 years. The original fort was 20 FT tall and the present ruins are declared historical landmarks by the archaeological survey of India.
