Dietrich Brandis, a German-British botanist and professor of forestry who spent over 30 years working in colonial India, created this institution in 1878. Further, under the British Imperial Forestry Service, the institute was recreated in 1906 as the Imperial Forest Research Institute.

Tourists fall in love with the splendid architecture of the edifice and its surroundings. The Institute is built on a lush green landscape that spreads over 450 hectares. The Botanical museum on Forestry comprises several sections on its premises which are, Pathology, Social Forestry, Silviculture, Timber, Non-wood forest products, and Entomology.
